Two Pence Weekly
Because "fine" is a complicated word
Some things in life deserve deep thought. Some things deserve a therapist. Some things deserve a strongly worded email. And some things really only deserve about two pence of thought.
Welcome to Two Pence Weekly.
This is where I take the completely ordinary, mildly irritating,
occasionally ridiculous things that happen in everyday life and
give them approximately the amount of intellectual attention they probably deserve.
Which is to say…
Not much.
It’s the thoughts that appear while you're putting the bins out. The things you suddenly remember three hours after the conversation. The tiny annoyances that shouldn't bother you but absolutely do. The strange little habits we've all somehow accepted as normal. The things you say, “Does anyone else do this?” about, only to realise that yes, apparently they do. And the things that make absolutely no difference to your life whatsoever, but you are now emotionally invested in them. Because sometimes you don't need a life-changing revelation. Sometimes you just need to know you're not the only person who has stood in front of the fridge three times in ten minutes, opened it again, and expected something new to have appeared. You know. Important stuff.
What counts as a Two Pence thought?
Pretty much anything that makes me stop and think:
“Hang on… why do we all do this?”
The everyday contradictions. The pointless irritations. The things nobody talks about. The things everybody talks about but nobody admits they secretly hate. The small victories. The unnecessary overthinking. The ridiculous conversations you have entirely inside your own head. And those moments where you realise you're behaving like a perfectly reasonable adult…
…right up until you hear yourself say it out loud.
There will probably be observations. There may be opinions. There will definitely be overthinking. And occasionally I might accidentally stumble across something vaguely profound before immediately ruining it with a joke.
That's how we roll on the Sofa.
So, what's the point?
There isn't one.
And that's rather the point.
Two Pence Weekly isn't here to fix your life. It isn't here to tell you how to become your best self. Frankly, I'm not entirely sure my best self knows where her glasses are. It's just a little weekly wander through the stuff that makes up actual life. The boring bits. The funny bits. The irritating bits.
The “Oh God, I thought it was just me” bits.
Because life is mostly made up of small things. And sometimes those small things are worth a couple of pence. Maybe even three. But let's not get carried away.
Pull up a seat.
Have a read. Have a little think. Have a quiet word with yourself about why you're this bothered by someone else's supermarket trolley technique. And if something makes you laugh, nod, sigh or mutter “Oh, for God's sake, yes”...
Then congratulations.
You've found your two pence.
Welcome to the Sofa.
