Bath Time Adventures: The Slippery Eel, A Grandparent's Tale
Updated: Sep 10
The Joys and Challenges of Bathing a Baby
My daughter asked me to bathe my grandson. It’s been ages since I’ve done that. I thought, “Sure, it’s like riding a bike!” Years ago, I could do this with my eyes closed. But let me tell you, things have changed.
I pick up my little grandson, and wow, you really forget how small and delicate they are. Off we go to the bathroom, and I’m feeling all nostalgic. I get him undressed, trying not to yank his little head off with his vest. Seriously, why do his ears go all Dumbo on me whenever something has to go over his head?
Now, we’re braced. I’ve got my arm around his back, holding the top of his arm near his armpit, and in he goes. Suddenly, he squeals so loud it makes me jump! My daughter always says how much he loves bath time. Well, my bad! I didn’t have the water warm enough. I was so scared of burning his delicate skin. Next time, I really need to crank up the heat a bit.

I grab the soap, lather him up, and rinse. I swear, they are like slippery eels, sliding all over the place! A newborn shouldn’t be able to move that much, right? But once the water hits them, they turn into these well-oiled escape artists. It’s like they want to ensure you practice your grip. So, I count to ten, hold my breath, and lift him out of the bath as quickly as I can, just in case the little Houdini has other plans.
I pass him back to my daughter, all dry, pyjamaed, and smelling of talc. I’m pretending I know what I’m doing, but let’s be real—I’m rather wet and covered in talc myself. She looks at me and just laughs.
The Reality of Grandparenting
Let me tell you, looking after your grandchildren is a whole different ball game compared to when you looked after your own. I mean, back in the day, I was a pro! Or at least, I thought I was. Now, I’m just a flustered grandparent trying to remember the tricks of the trade.
The Learning Curve
Every time I think I’ve got it down, something new pops up. Like, did you know babies can wiggle like they’re auditioning for a role in a circus? I didn’t! I thought I was just bathing a baby, not wrestling an octopus. And the noise? Oh boy, the noise! It’s like he’s auditioning for a role in a horror film.
The Aftermath of Bath Time
After the bath, I’m left with a sense of accomplishment mixed with a dash of embarrassment. I mean, I’m the adult here, right? But there I am, looking like I’ve just gone ten rounds with a toddler. Hopefully, it’ll be a while before she asks me to tackle bath time again. Clearly, I’m not as good at this as I thought I was.
The Sweet Moments
But you know what? Amidst the chaos, there are those sweet moments. When he looks up at me with those big, innocent eyes, it melts my heart. It reminds me why I keep coming back for more. It’s not just about the bath; it’s about the giggles, the splashes, and the memories we create together.
The Takeaway
So, if you find yourself in a similar situation, just remember: it’s okay to feel a bit out of your depth. We’re all learning, right? And who knows, maybe one day I’ll master the art of baby bathing again. Until then, I’ll just keep my sense of humour intact and embrace the chaos.
And hey, if you ever need a laugh, just think of me, the slightly soggy grandparent, navigating the wild world of bath time. It’s a ride, I tell you!
